Where the Spirit of the Lord Is

Nothing can stop the Holy Spirit of God. Jesus said He's like the wind: He just goes wherever He wants to. I'm afraid some people make the mistake of thinking that the Holy Spirit is only active in church settings where there is intimate worship occurring. While that must certainly be the case if true worship is to happen (John 4:24), the Holy Spirit is not restrained to our obedience or by our disobedience. He does not need us. He cannot be contained. He could sweep right into a bar full of drunkards and bring about strong conviction of sin and judgment to the point that those men and women would experience revival! Normally, He does this by means of a believing vessel, but He by no means has to operate in any particular way except according to His own character and nature.

Sometimes when I survey the religious climate of America today, I get depressed. I wonder why the Holy Spirit doesn't sweep in and change our hearts and revive our churches. I wonder why another great, and much needed, revival tarries. But, make no mistake. The Holy Spirit will and is building the church of Christ, according to His own wisdom and love.

I am continually encouraged to read reports about the growing church in the most unexpected places. But that is just what we would expect the Holy Spirit to be doing. He can't be stopped!

A hundred years ago, there were few to no Christians that could be found in China, the largest, most highly populated country in the world. Today, Christians number in the tens of millions. Some estimate between 87 million to 100 million. This growth occurred despite intense government restriction and persecution. That's almost 1/3rd the population of the United States, but it is only about 8% of China's population. So much of China is still unreached, but the Holy Spirit is at work in the church there.

Also, Muslims are coming to Christ in unprecedented numbers in the Middle East. Places like Iraq, Iran, and Syria are the last places you would expect Christians to be thriving, but according to persecution watchdog Open Doors, it is happening. According to a Gospel Coalition report, "more Iranians have become Christians in the last 20 years than in the previous 13 centuries put together since Islam came to Iran." And "the church in Iran has become the fastest growing in the world." This is happening in Afghanistan as well. These are places where you will be killed if you convert to Christianity from Islam. But the Holy Spirit can't be stopped and can't be killed!

I have prayed for years that Islam would become a stench in the nostrils of the world and that Muslims would come to Christ by the millions and billions. This is happening even in secularized Europe. Once dead and withered churches are now being filled with former Muslim immigrants who have now come to Christ or converted to Christianity. While it's true that some have converted just to adjust, they are at least going to churches. This is an opportunity for evangelicals in Europe to reach the nations within their own borders like never before! Immigrants from Syria, Iraq, and Afghanistan who never before could go to church freely are now doing just that.

We have that opportunity right here too. Even in Albertville. You just have to know where to look. Sun Trace apartments, for instance, is full of internationals--Guatemalans, Mexicans, Haitians, and Ethiopians. If you want to reach the nations, you don't have to go far. You have the Holy Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.

Free in the power of the Holy Spirit to do His will,

David
